For years, many taxpayers received no direct tax benefit for charitable gifts unless they itemized deductions. Beginning with the 2026 tax year, many taxpayers who take the standard deduction can also claim a charitable deduction for cash donations made to qualified charities. Under this new federal tax law:
Married couples filing jointly may deduct up to $2,000 in qualifying charitable contributions.
Individuals may deduct up to $1,000 in qualifying charitable contributions.
The deduction is available even if you do not itemize deductions on your federal tax return.
This new provision allows more people to support causes they care about while potentially reducing their taxable income.
If a married couple files jointly, takes the standard deduction, and contributes $2,000 to qualified charities during the year, they may be eligible to deduct the full $2,000 on their federal tax return.
Be sure to retain receipts or written acknowledgments for your donations and consult your tax advisor regarding your specific tax situation. Charitable deductions are subject to IRS rules and eligibility requirements.
